MEIL tunnels its way to break records; Veligonda Tunnel 1 works completed Featured
The Megha Englneering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) has successfully accomplished the works of the first tunnel on Poola Subbaiah Veligonda project. This project is going to completely transform Prakasam and Kadapa districts. Irrigation facility would change these districts into granaries.
For this tunnel works, the MEIL has employed the largest yet tunnel boring machine, which is a record in itself. Despite pandemic scare, the project was accomplished in a record time. The total length of the first tunnel is 18 km, of which MEIL has taken up digging of 3.6 km stretch.
The MEIL has used TBM tunnel boring machine to protect the fauna and flora of the Srisailam sanctuary. This tunnel is but rarely used and has been used for the first ever time in Veligonda project. Another key feature is the usage of the longest conveyor belt. It would take around two hours to send the conveyor belt into the 18-km-long tunnel.
It goes to the credit of the MEIL staff members who worked deep inside the tunnel at temperatures ranging between 50 and 60 degrees centigrade. Braving corona and incessant rains, they dug 10 mtr deep tunnels. Now, the focus is on the second tunnel and works are going on at a brisk pace.
The tunnel is intended to transfer 3001 cusecs (85 cuecs). This is one of the biggest gravity tunnels in the country. The project is envisaged to irrigate a command area of 1.20 lakh acres and address the drinking water needs of over 4 lakh people.
